In Aquaman 3, the oceans once again become the stage of a cataclysmic battle that threatens not just Atlantis, but the entire planet. Jason Momoa returns as Arthur Curry, now consolidated as the King of Atlantis, facing a new challenge: Arion, an enigmatic sorcerer played by Timothée Chalamet, who claims to be the rightful heir to the throne of Atlantis, descendant of an ancient line much older than Arthur’s.
The trailer begins showing Arthur leading Atlantis into a new era of peace, working alongside Mera (Amber Heard or her possible replacement) to unify the underwater kingdoms. However, this tranquility is disrupted when magical phenomena begin to disturb the oceans: devastating storms, sea creatures mysteriously disappearing, and ancestral structures emerging from the depths.
Investigating these events, Arthur and Mera discover ancient texts that speak of Arion, a lost prince with divine abilities linked to the ocean’s most primal forces. Believed missing thousands of years ago, Arion reappears to challenge Arthur for the throne of Atlantis. This character, played by Chalamet, is not a conventional villain, but a complex antihero with a deep connection to the mystical powers of the ocean.
Arion believes Atlantis has lost its true purpose by disconnecting from the sea’s ancestral power. Their ideology is based on the need to purify the oceans of human influence, seeing pollution and environmental destruction as evidence that humanity does not deserve to coexist with the sea. This philosophical conflict places Arion and Arthur on opposite sides, leading to epic underwater confrontations that combine magical energy with technology and Atlantis weaponry.
Timothée Chalamet brings a unique charisma to Arion, portraying him as a mysterious character, respectful of Arthur’s strength but determined to claim the throne at any cost. Tensions rise as Arion uses his magic to lift ancient submerged cities, claiming them as his own and endangering Atlantis’ sovereignty.
The film’s climax shows a spectacular confrontation between Arthur and Arion, featuring colossal sea creatures, ancestral ocean gods and breathtaking underwater landscapes. The final battle not only tests Arthur’s physical might, but also his leadership and his connection to both worlds: land and sea.
Although Arthur manages to defeat Arion, the sorcerer’s fate is up in the air, leaving open the possibility of his return. The film concludes with Arthur recognizing the need for greater respect and balance between the surface world and the oceans, paving the way for a more complex and challenging future for Atlantis.
With striking visuals, deep narrative, and memorable performances, Aquaman 3: Return of the Tides promises to be an underwater epic that will captivate franchise fans and a new generation of viewers alike.
